Writing has been an immensely rewarding career for both myself and my husband, a New York Times best-selling writer. As a way to give back, we created (with our friend Grant Parsons) the National Writers Series, a nonprofit that hosts America’s best writers for up-close and personal conversations in our northern Michigan town of Traverse City. Our guests have included Anna Quindlen, Peter Matthiessen, Mitch Albom, Sebastian Junger, Tom Brokaw and many others. Proceeds from the event help support a college scholarship program and a new “Writers On Front Street” program that mentors aspiring public high school student writers.
